Government regulations determine that any noise level that is 85dB and above requires the facility to integrate a full, comprehensive sound program in order to address these noise levels for health and safety hazards. An acoustic curtain enclosure around the sound source will create a room in which the noise is contained, for the most part. Depending on the frequency level and the decibel output, an acoustical enclosure room has the potential to decrease sound anywhere between 15dB and 45dB!

Consider this – a 20dB reduction is about 4 times quieter than the sound source originally creates. A sound output of 100dB can be reduced to 80dB with an acoustic enclosure, below the required minimum of sound regulations!

How do we know this? A project that we worked on to solve an unwanted noise issue (similar to this example) with low frequency, high decibel sound transference (some of the hardest noises to reduce and contain) has been already accomplished and successfully tested! The time you may spend on integrating an intensive sound program can now be spent on actual business operations instead of preventative measures, because of the use of an acoustic room enclosure.

High Heat Curtain Enclosure Rooms

So you have a high heat application, such as industrial ovens, metal casting processes, the manufacture of metals from their raw materials, and welding facilities… now you are probably wondering, how do I enclose the source of heat with a curtain enclosure? In a large space full of workers and potentially temperature-sensitive components, it is important to maintain a comfortable level of temperature in the work area when high heat processes can range from 200° to 1500°F. Noise Reduction Simplified

Sound does not pass through surfaces and/or structures, but rather “activates” a building. The building itself actually transmits sound waves as energy, which moves through the building’s structure. Sound-absorptive batting that is built into the industrial noise curtains converts this energy to heat. The acoustically-rated membrane, which is also built into the curtain, will assist in dramatically reducing the sound from the source.

Consider the analogy of light passing through a window. A light curtain with low-density material will not block all of the light. There needs to be a material that is more solid in nature to effectively block the light. The same is true with sound. Although sound insulation will help with the absorption of a sound wave, it needs a higher-density acoustic sound barrier membrane within the industrial curtain in order to drastically reduce noise.

Warehouse acoustic curtains or industrial sound curtain walls typically use staggered mounting patterns and proper edge sealing to dramatically improve the effectiveness of the sound barrier curtain.

Sound Absorption & Reflective Surfaces in a Warehouse

The absorption of sound is especially challenging when dealing with work areas that have a number of reflective surfaces. Reflective surfaces can be made of metal, glass, granite, cement, cinder block, or other smooth, hard surface materials. In warehouses and other industrial settings, this would be anything from the cement walls, concrete floors, corrugated aluminum ceilings, and steel trusses.

Sound waves, especially the hard-to-block low frequency waves, bounce off these surfaces easily. This is why having the proper acoustic curtain system, in any type of setting with a great number of reflective surfaces, is important. Since warehouses are known for large scale, open areas, the chance for reverberated noise / sound to travel and reflect are much higher than in other settings. An effective industrial sound barrier, whether they are curtain walls or baffles, can cut down and/or can redirect many of these sound wave reflections.

Absorbing Sound from Reflecting Surfaces in an Office

In a more “polished,” office setting, this would include glass windows, metal walls or structures, or floor tiles and/or hardwood floors. Most offices are more intimate, with management and other personnel working in separate workspaces in a larger office area. With people in a more confined space, a greater level of noise reduction is required. Industrial noise curtains soften the everyday office noise that may disrupt the workflow. An ideal solution is the following: install ceiling baffles and/or acoustic wall panels, which provide additional sound reduction along with industrial grade noise curtains. The sound waves will be effectively reduced using the baffles and panels, cutting down the echo. A customer initially contacted AmCraft to provide a curtain wall enclosure with three points of access (and one alternate access point) that will not only seal off the area with wall and a ceiling, but will also include NESHAP compliant media filters integrated within the curtain to sustain the necessary airflow. In the design phase, careful attention was placed first to where items will be located in relation to a proper ventilation system. Drop it Down: Suspending a Softwall Enclosure System

The customer needed the system to be configured in way that it would drop down from the ceiling. The curtain wall enclosure area required a mounting grid to attach the translucent PVC vinyl ceiling so the light fixtures above the ceiling could be utilized without compromising edge sealing of the vinyl enclosure itself. A steel mounting grid was suspended from the ceiling, and the track was attached to the grid, which created the enclosed space.
